The Beginning
For 50 years, Ganton has been one of Australia’s longest running specialist shirtmakers. After a number of years in the industry, founder Allan Marmot established the Ganton brand in 1974 after wanting to give Australia something new. He identified all men were not built the same, and that many men with an average body type had arms that were either longer or shorter than the average sleeve length. After months of hard work he created the Classic fit shirt with fractional sleeve lengths in 1974.
Through the Years
Ganton enjoyed making Australian made shirts for many years until overseas manufacturing was introduced with our partner factory in Thailand. This major operational change was through necessity to keep up with the demands of the market, slowly Australian made shirts declined and overseas manufacturing increased. Although, we continued to make Australian made to order shirts in our factory in Marrickville, Sydney where we have been based since 1974. With each decade we have adapted to the different trends while still keeping quality, design and comfort for our wearers.
Next Chapter
At 86 years old, after many successful years growing Ganton, Allan Marmot decided to hand the Ganton torch to Cambridge Clothing in late 2023. As an avid wearer of Ganton, he wanted to pass it on to someone who would look after it just as he did.
Cambridge Clothing has a rich heritage, established in 1867 in Auckland and now with offices in Melbourne, Sydney and Auckland. They began by making shirts for the early pioneers 157 years ago and have expanded into men’s suiting and tailoring and are one of the leading men’s tailored clothing specialists in Australia and New Zealand with brands such as Cambridge, Gibson, Dom Bagnato, Joe Black and City Club to name a few.
Cambridge Clothing are working to expand Ganton’s reach throughout Australia thanks to their pre-existing network with individual retailers and contacts at David Jones, having already reintroduced Ganton into David Jones Bourke Street and are keen to add many more stores.
